1st Lieutenant Philip L. Bek
Born on June 5, 1920 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University until he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 02 May, 1942 with a rating of navigator. On 09 August 1942, he departed for Melbourne, Australia, where he was assigned to the 65th Bombardier Squadron, 43rd Bombardier Group. During his tour of duty, he flew 23 sorties for a total of 180 combat hours. On 13 June 1943, Lieutenant Bek was shot down flying B-17F "Georgia Peach" 41-24454, over Rabaul, New Britain, and taken prisioner by the Japanese Army. His death was later confirmed on 31 December 1943. During his tour of duty, he recieved many awards. Among those were the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Star, the American Defense Service Medal and a Purple Heart.
