Aircraft History
Personal transport for Brigadier General Wurtsmith (C.O. 5th Fighter Command). Converted from a bomber to a personal aircraft (including blue leather in the radio compartment.) On her nose there was a painting of a baby's face in a circle, with "Well Goddam!"
Author Steve Birdsall adds:
"Mike Claringbould and a couple of other people had 41-2386 as "Well
Goddam's" serial, but that's wrong - 41-2386 is not a B-17 serial number at all. "Well Goddam" is a B-17F, possibly originally "Lulu Belle" or "Panama Hattie" (my best guesses)."
Wartime History
This bomber lost a left wingtip which was replaced with a salvaged one. On landing in Townsville, lost a left wheel and tire but suffered no great damage and no injuries to crew or ground personnel.
