Aircraft History Built by Canadian Vickers at Cartierville in Quebec, Canada as a Model CL-1 a licence built Model 28-5A. Delivered to the U. S. Navy (USN) as PBV-1A Catalina bureau number 67856. Assigned to the U. S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as OA-10A Catalina serial number 44-33878. Ferried overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron (2nd ERS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On October 1, 1944 took off from Middleburg Airfield piloted by 1st Lieutenant John R. Dickinson with call sign "Daylight One Three" on a rescue mission to locate P-38 piloted by Lt. John McGee, 419th Fighter Squadron who ditched due to engine failure off Waigeo Island. Reaching the island, this Catalina landed in heavy surf roughly 1 1/2 miles southeast of the island and the hull sustained extensive damage and filled with water, forcing the crew to bail out the fuselage to keep it afloat. During the night with the rough seas worsening overnight and everyone aboard the aircraft became sea sick. By 11:00pm, a rescue PT Boat arrived to guard the aircraft and render aide. On October 2, 1944 at 6:00am, the PT Boat towed the damaged flyingboat 15 miles into a sheltered cove where it was beached and confidential documents and equipment removed. Later, a repair crew was flown back to the stricken aircraft and emergency repairs were made until October 6, 1944 when the aircraft was flown back to Middleburg Airfield. Over the next month, the damaged OA-10 was fully repaired and returned to service. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
