Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38 Lightning model and serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF). Mission History This P-38 crashed at Amron (Nobnob) to the north of Madang. Wreckage The crash site includes propellers, engines landing gear and machine guns only remain at this crash site. The rest was either broken up, scrapped or otherwise missing from this violent impact. Justin Taylan visited the site in 1993: "In July 1993 I was first shown this wreckage at Amron (Nobnob). At that time, none of the local people or missionaries had any eyewitness knowledge of the crash. They only knew it crashed during the war." Keith Hopper adds: "The locals say the pilot bailed out, was captured and murdered in the Amron. The aircraft certainly impacteded hard. I am not aware of this aircraft ever being identified. I've always suspected that it might be P-38H 42-66904." References Thanks to Keith Hopper for additional information Contribute
