Pilot Sgt Sgt Max Holdsworth, 411067 (survived) Sydney, NSW Ditched March 2, 1943 Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Assigned U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40K-10-CU Kittyhawk serial number 42-10197. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History During January 1943, assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Reassembled by 2 Air Depot (2 AD. On February 22, 1943 assigned and delivered to No. 77 Squadron. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On March 2, 1943 due to a failure of the fuel system that resulted in no pressure on the gauge and caused a complete engine failure. This P-40 ditched wheels up into the sea at the northern end of China Strait southeast of Milne Bay. Pilot Holdsworthy survived the ditching unhurt and later returned to duty. Officially, written off May 26, 1943.
