Aircraft History
Built by Lockheed. MSN 394A-1147/1187. Transfered to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARC). Next, assigned to the U.S. Navy (USN), CVW-14 to squadron VS-35.

Mission History
On August 10, 2004 took off from USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) on a naval exercise over the Pacific Ocean. This aircraft crashed on North Iwo Jima (Kita Iwo Jima) and the entire crew was killed on impact. Afterwards, the cause of crash was likely due to crew error, believed mistook radar image of island for that of carrier.

Search
After the crash, HS-14 deployed two Seahawks within three hours to Iwo Jima to conduct search and recovery operations. Working closely with USAF Pararescuemen (PJs) from the 33rd RQS, the USS Lake Champlain and USS Gary, HS-14 was able to locate the crash site and recovered the remains of the crew and salvaged parts of the wreckage.

Memorials
The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. All are memorialized with a memorial marker at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at plot A-H 64. After the recovery of remains, the four crew were transported to the United States for permenant burial. Zellem and Myrick are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Zellem at section 66, Site 3003. Myrick at section 34 site 3681. Showalter and Pupplo are buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Showalter at secion Y site 9-A. Pupplo at secion A-E site 140A. After the crash, U.S. President Bush wrote to the wife of one of the crew.
