Wartime History
This airfield was developed as the first overseas base for the 20th AF Bomber Command with the new B-29 Superfortress. On July 7, 1944 Brigadier General LaVern G Saunders takes command. On August 29, 1944 Major General Curtis E. LeMay took command. During late February 1945, the 468th BG begins a movement to new bases on Tinian.
