Destroyed 8th FG, 35th FS P-38 After Japanese
Air Raid on Wakde
Airfield A Japanese air raid on June 6, 1944 destroyed six planes, and damaged 80. Bob Rocker adds: "This was ace Richard "Dick" West's P-38 and the P-38 next to it the pilot was killed by the blast as he was sleeping in a hammock slung between the two booms and was killed by flying metal fragments. I'll get his name for you when I talk to Dick West Crew Chief Bill Wallisch as Dick West died about 6 months ago."
