Location Lat 6° 16' 60S Long 145° 52' 0E Kainantu Airfield is located at at Kainantu. in the Highlands in New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Construction During the late 1930s, a single runway was built at this location oriented roughly east to west. World War II Pacific Theatre History As of mid-1942 the single airstrip was 900 x 85 x 550 yards, with a five foot drop in the center of runway. Reported as soft after rain, approaches fair (trees and hills), Facilities included two houses and native houses. Medical Assistant Fowler and W.O. Boyan (male nurse). Postwar Kainantu Airfield remained in use until at least the 1970s. Today Disused as an airfield. Today, buildings and homes are atop the former runway area.
