Installed prior to the war. Battery Smith was
a long
range (26 miles) flat trajectory 12" gun emplaced in an exposed battery, the other being Battery Hearn. This gun could
traverse a full 360 degrees.
Relatives
Erich Snoke (cousin of Donald R. Snoke):
"My distant cousin, then Lt Donald R. Snoke, Washington, PA was the commanding officer of Battery Smith, at the time of the surrender in May 1942. He was taken prisoner, and later died aboard a Hellship, on January 9, 1945 in Formosa when it was bombed by aircraft from the USS Hornet."
Today
The original stenciled labels
are still visible on the walls.
