Frank Fariello  Pilot 41st Fighter Squadron

41st Fighter Squadron escort mission over Balikapapan, Borneo Fariello was flying a P-47 when he scored confirmed kill against an unsuspecting George.

Confirmed Kill at Balikpapan
"...And I dumped my wing tanks and made damn sure nobody else beat me to it, cause this clown was just sitting out there. It it was a George, and the reason I know it was because I flew up his tail, and I was so damn close - I was determined not to miss this guy.

We had altitude on him and came down out of the sun, and got on his tail. I was so damn close to him that my machine guns were hitting him on both sides. My four guns on the left were hitting him on his left side, and my four guns on the right were hitting him on the right side. He was right at the point of harmonization of the machine guns.

And all he did was flip over and bail out. I let him go, and when I went underneath him, I could look back and see that it was a radial engine but the nose was round, [indicating it was a George] and of corse that big meatball on the side.

The rest of the guys, when they saw I was after him, there was a mad rush to get down - maybe there was somebody else down there to shoot at. There was just that one, and that was my one victory."
