Military History Museum (Fort Abercrombie , Battery 6)
Built
in the ready ammunition bunker, this building is several feet thick
concrete and is covered with soil. It was completed on 30 December
1943 by Navy SeaBees of CB-43. Located adjacent to the building are
remains of two eight inch gun mounts. Portions of the gun barrels
are displayed. Some parts of the guns are to be found quite some distance
from the original positions as they were destroyed by explosive charge

Since July 1, 1971 the Navy turned all airport runways and
areas to the north over to the State of Alaska for operation
and maintenance. The base was also turned over to the Coast
Guard. There is still an overgrown seaplane ramp and the
WWII hangers still in use.
Memorial
Star
On the slopes of Old Women's Mountain, across the road from
the main gate to the base, there is a star which is lighted
during the Christmas season. At the base of this star there is a memorial stone,
engraved "In memory of all military personnel
who have given their lives while engaged in operations from
Kodiak 30 November 1980."

Fort Greely / Buskin Hill
Part
of the Fort Greely Headquarters located between the mouth of the Buskin River
and Deadman's Curve. It is now largely within the Buskin River State Recreation
Site. Entrance is near the south end of Boy Scout Lake (Lake Margaret) and
is a footpath. There are remains of Quonset huts, but none standing. There
are two gun mounts. There are two ammunition bunkers close to the gun mounts.
The bunkers have welded shut doors.
Battery number 3 at Buskin
Hill
They were in support of gun , site 8, which consisted
of four 155mm guns on Panama mounts. The searchlight station is just past the
quarry, uphill of the highway. It is almost completely obscured by the trees.
The west DEC (now gone) is visible as a dot just at the far edge of the quarry
entrance. This view is from near the Base End Station.
Iron
Bottom Beach
A WWII era bomb, larger than 700 lbs. was retrieved and
disposed of in recent years. Once safely on the ground, it was carefully rolled
into place in the museum's Miller Point Bunker for display.
Puffin
Island / Battery 7
Today
a bird nesting area protected by the Migratory Bird Act. The birds
concentrate on the outer cliffs but most of the island is stained.
By far the dominant bird on our visit was sea gulls. There were only
two other individuals of other species seen. There are open holes
in the ground. These are obscured by the waist deep grass.
There are no
trails to speak of except a very narrow hard to see trail where
the road was. This facility was completed on February 11, 1944.
It had no observation stations. It was equipped with a M1 range
finder, an SCR-593 (BC-728 4-channel radio receiver), and a SCR-547
radar located at a ground elevation of 45 feet with the antenna
only 9 feet above ground.
