Located 135 km southwest of Townsville,
and 310 m above sea-level, 138 km east of the Great Dividing
Range. It is about 200 km east of the edge of the vast flat plains
which extend across to the Gulf of Carpentaria and into far western
Queensland.
Formally a bustling gold town, it became an active USAAF 5th Air Force
and RAAF base during 1942.
