Mackay

MapLat 121° 8' 60S Long 149° 11' 60E  Island off northern Queensland.

During the WWII, the United States Army Air Force established rest and recreation facilities in Mackay. From the end of January 1943 until early 1944, thousands of United States servicemen were ferried almost daily from New Guinea to Mackay by air transport to spend around 10 days on furlough (R&R).

The Worst Aviation Disaster in WWII
Memorial is dedicated to the B-17C that crashed at Bakers Creek, outside of Mackay, on 14 June, 1943 killing 40 of the 41 passengers and crews that day. It was the worst Australian air disaster then and now, the worst US military air disaster at that time and the worst single disaster of any of the 12,731 B-17s built.
