During WWII they were occupied by the Japanese in
February of 1942, and the site of several airfields and bases. The
999 islands of the Moluccas archipelago make up today the most isolated
and unrecognised part of Indonesia. During the 16th and 17th centuries,
the Moluccas have been the center of the spice trade, supplying Europe
with the precious cloves, nutmeg and mace.
