to the NW and Toem is to the SE.
History
On May 15, 1944, the U.S. 41st Division
assaulted Arara. The 163rd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) went ashore
at Arara unopposed. Later the 155th and 167th Infantry Regiments fought
in the Wakde-Sarmi area of New Guinea. Fighting was much lighter here
by comparison.
Japanese Counter Attack
A Japanese force of the 223rd Infantry "Yoshino Force" attacked the
Arare, moving south through the jungle to attack the American's
flank from May 18 - 31, 1944.
These two regiments
accounted for more than 1000 Japanese while on the Maffin Bay perimeter
which guarded the Fifth Air Force's airstrip at Wakde. Also, the
33rd Infantry Division (Illinois National Guard) 123rd Infantry
Regiment
fought at Maffin Bay. The 1st FA Regiment
was reorganized and redesignated as the 1st Field Artillery Battalion
in 1940. The 1st FA participated in the amphibious assault at Maffin
Bay, New Guinea.
