History
Lt. Col Ray Murray's 2nd Battalion. 6th landed
on the island at 16:55 on November 20, 1943. USN fighters and dive bombers
straffed and bombed the island preceeding the landing. The island was
quickly secured with little resistance. Only a small force of Japanese
defenders was on the island, and many perished in the air strike. On
D+2, Marines established their artillery from the 2nd Battalion 10th
was landed by boats on Bairiki to provide support for the fighting on
Betio, and afterwards a field hospital
for the wounded of the campaign.
