Location
The Johore Strait separates Singapore to the south and the southern end of the Malayan Peninsula to the north and connects to the Singapore Strait to the east. Borders Johor (Johore). Prewar, the Johore causeway with a railroad line connected the mainland of Malaysia to Singapore. At the eastern end is Ubin Island (Pulau Ubin) and Ketam Island (Pulau Ketam).
Wartime History
On February 8, 1942 after a 15 hour artillery bombardment, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 25th Army under the command of General Tomoyuki Yamashita including the 5th Division and 18th Division aboard barges and collapsible boats cross the Johore Strait and make an amphibious landing on the northwest of Singapore. The Japanese were able to land roughly 4,000 with available boats and barges and by the end of the night had landed roughly 13,000 soldiers that quickly overwhelm the Australian Army 22nd Brigade with roughly 3,000 soldiers defending the area.
