Located
on the Bomana Road, at the edge of the former Berry
Drome (12 Mile) near Port Moresby.
Bomana War Cemetery
This site was first used as a cemetery by Australian medical
unit at the start of the Papuan Campaign in early 1942, and
Bougainville campaign of 1944-45. One woman is buried
there, and 3,778 men. Other commonwealth cemeteries
in Papua New Guinea are at Lae, Rabaul and Samarai
Island.
Commonwealth War Cemetery
This Commonwealth war cemetery has the marble
graves of 4,500 Allied servicemen buried from WWII,
primarily from the battles of Kokoda and
losses in the Port Moresby area.
British POW Graves
Also, it contains
the 436 British POWs
that died on Ballale
Island,
working as slave labor for the Japanese, their graves are listed as 'Known Unto God" and a memorial plaque is located at the rear of the cemetery.
