Coastwatcher Murray
An ex-patrioit, Harry Murray escaped the
Japanese occupation of New Ireland, and then returned later in the
war as a coastwatcher to Lihir in the latter part of WWII.
Catholic Mission station / Japanese Submarine Area
Catholic Mission station before the war. A cave on the island
was used by Japanese submariners who used it for shelter. It was here
that Coastwatcher Murray discovered that a Japanese submarines made
visits to the island.
