History
After occupying nearby Kavieng without opposition, the Mai No 2 Special Infantry landed at New Hanover looking for opposition, but found none.

Chapman's Reef
Famous for its barracudas, and the Japanese supply ship and midget submarine sunk here off the northwestern tip of New Hanover. These wrecks were part of a Japanese task force assembled in Three Islands Harbor and sunk by Allied bombing raids in 1944.
