Location
Located 225 miles south-east of New Guinea Named by Europeans 'Sudest' or 'Tagula' and marked accordingly on maps. It is the largest of the eastern islands of the Louisiade Archipelago, and is relatively isolated. Known as Vanatinai locally.
Largest island in the Louisiades. Tagula has an area of 310 square miles (800 square km). Surrounded by a coral reef, the rugged island rises to 2,644 feet (806 metres) at Mount Riu (Mount Rattlesnake)
