Borders Irian
Jaya on one side, this province was recaptured by the Allied
to coincide with the amphibious assault at Hollandia (Jayapura) to protect its flank from Japanese reinforcement from
the Wewak area. Know as the West
Sepik Province after PNG independence, until recently when the
name was changed to "Sandaun", tok pidgin for sun
down.
