west of New Georgia and Kolombangara. The island is named
after an infamous local head-hunter.
Prewar
Prior to the war, it was the
base of the British District Officer for the Central Solomons.
Wartime History
The Japanese occupied Gizo without opposition. Kure 6th military contingent Reksentai (Marines) occupied Gizo during March 1943. Starting on "Gizo Jima Kantei" (Gizo Island Quite Revolt) began on July 23, 1943 until October 10, 1943. On August 2, there was an enemy PT boat claimed sunk [PT-109].
Gizo
Site
of the busy town of Gizo, with main street of buildings, and fishing
villages and market. At 50sq km, Gizo is so small that the inter-island
aircraft use nearby Nusatupe Airfield. There are several war wrecks in the area to dive on including: a Zero fighter, a Wildcat, Kawanishi flying boat. Also, the wreck
of Japanese supply ship, Toa Maru 2.
