Henderson Field
The wall plaques in the Domestic Terminal are in good condition. The three memorial pillars and plaques outside are also in good condition, but overgrown with grass which needs to be cut back regularly.  Photo Peter Flahavin

6th Seabees Memorial
Overgrown with 8 foot high grass and weeds. To get to the tower steps a machete was required. The small memorial pillar to the 6th Seabees was totally obscured.

WWII 1943 Control Tower
Has graffiti sprayed on the wood and two of the wooden guard rails on top are missing (only one in 1998)

Edson Ridge Memorial (on the ridge)
White obilisque memorial, near  the site of Col. Edson’s command post. Memorial dirty - could use a scrubbing or repaint. Plaque dirty. Grass needs to be cutback.

Overgrown with grass, dirty and had graffiti sprayed on it.

 
Mt. Austen Gifu Battle Area
Metal US Army Star and memorial plaque - good condition, freshly repainted star.

 
Mt. Austen, Wright Road Memorial Plaque
Small while pillar and plaque by the side of the road, good condition.

There is a while US Memorial pillar here, but plaque is ripped off.

 
Red Beach Memorial
White pillar marking the landing spot of the 1st and 5th Marines needs a cleaning. The plaque (piece of typed paper between two perspex pieces) is half smashed and water damaged since 1998.

East Kola Ridge (Matanikau) Mitchell Paige Battle Area
US memorial here, but it could not be located in 1999.
