Yokosuka
P1Y Ginga (Frances)
The first truly high-speed medium bomber to serve
the Japanese Navy, accepted by the Navy in Oct. 1944.
The Japanese
Army Air Force's Ki-67 Peggy was based on the same concept. While the
aircraft's performance was impressive, it was plauged by technical
problems that delayed service introduction. The P1Y2-S night fighter
variant flew in June 1944, but it was a disappointment and those
aircraft (which had retained their bomb bays) reverted back to
the bomber role. Similarly futile was the P1Y1-S modification.
