Kawasaki
Ki-100
Kawasaki's design team had evolved
an excellent high-altitude interceptor fighter as the Ki-65-II-KAI,
but by late 1944 a shortage of the Ha-140 liquid cooled inline
engine was resulting in a large number of engineless airframes
being held in storage.
This aircraft was a derivation
of the Kawasaki Ki-61 airframe using a Ha-112 radial and a
cut down rear fuselage for better cockpit visibility. The first
of these conversions being flown in February 1945 under the new
designation Ki-100.
With the termination of the Ki-61 production, a new version of the Type 5 replaced it on the production
line.
