Ship History
Participated in the December 1941 invasion of Wake. Next, the January - March 1942 invasion of Rabaul, Gasmata, Lae, Bougainville, Battle of Coral Sea. It bombarded Henderson Field on August 24, 1942 and was involved in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. In late August, it did a troop transport run to Milne Bay, and evacuation of Taupota on September 4, 1942.
Sinking Histroy
Departed Rabaul to evacuate troop from Goodenough. A direct bomb hit near stern disabled ship, then continued strafing and near-misses led to uncontrollable flooding; 68 dead. Sunk by Allied aircraft, eight miles northwest of Vakuta Island on September 11, 1943.
On September 26, ISOKAZE and MOCHIZUKI rescued 83 survivors from Normanby Island, including Lieutenant Commander Kajimoto (later C.O. KIYOSHIMO), but Comdesdiv 30 (Captain Yasutake Shiro) killed in action.
