Background
The 38th Bombardment Group (Medium) was assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II. The 38th BG was nicknamed "Sun Setters" and comprised of the Headquarters Squadron (HQ), 15th Reconnaissance Squadron (15th RS), 69th Bombardment Squadron (69th BS), 70th Bombardment Squadron (70th BS).

Headquarters Squadron (HQ)
On March 8, 1942 transfers from Brisbane to Ballarat Airfield. On April 30, 1942 transfers to Amberly Field.

15th Reconnaissance Squadron (Medium)
The 15th Reconnaissance Squadron was sent overseas to Australia and became the 405th Bombardment Squadron (Medium).

69th Bombardment Squadron (69th BS)
Assigned to the 38th Bomb Group (38th BG) until February 26, 1943 to 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG).

70th Bombardment Squadron (70th BS)
Assigned to the 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG) Jan 15, 1941– February 26, 1943 to 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG).

71st Bombardment Squadron (71st BS) "The Wolf Pack"
The 71st Bombardment Squadron (Medium) was nicknamed "The Wolf Pack".

405th Bombardment Squadron (405th BS) "The Green Dragons"
The 405th Bombardment Squadron (405th BS) served in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II.

822nd Bombardment Squadron (822nd BS) "The Black Panthers"
The 822nd Bombardment Squadron (822nd BS) served in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II.

823rd Bombardment Squadron (823rd BS) "The Terrible Tigers"
The 823rd Bombardment Squadron (823rd BS) served in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II.
