Major Lofton R. Henderson in uniform
On June 4, 1942 Missing In Action (MIA) during the Battle of Midway piloting SBD-2 Dauntless 2129. Afterwards, three airfields were named "Henderson Field" in his honor: Lunga Point Airfield (Henerson Field, Bomber 1) on Guadalcanal plus Midway Airfield (Eastern Island Airfield, NAS Midway Islands, Henderson Field) on Eastern Island and later Sand Island Airfield (Henderson Field) in Midway Atoll.
