| Location Lat 14° 31' 16S Long 132° 22' 40E Tindal Field is located between Katherine Field and Manbulloo in the Northern Territory in Australia. Originally known as Carson's Airfield. Also known as Tindal Airfield, Tindal Strip or Tindal Drome. To the northeast is the Stuart Highway and Stuart Railway. To the north is the Katherine River. Still in use today as RAAF Base Tindal as a military airbase. Construction During 1942, construction was begun by the U.S. Army 43rd Engineer General Service Regiment as Carson's Airfield as a single runway for use by U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24D Liberators but was never fully completed with other airfields in the area used instead. Wartime History Although constructed for the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) heay bombers, no American planes or squadrons were based at this location. By early 1944, the airfield was listed as under construction (U/C) and renamed Tindal Field in honor of RAAF (RAAF) Wing Commander Archibald Robert Tindal. Today Still in use today as RAAF Base Tindal as a military airbase. Also known as Tindal Airport. The single runway is oriented 32/14 measures 9,003' x 150' surfaced with Asphalt.
