Carolina Airfield was located at Hacienda Luisita in Negros Occidental Province on Negros Island in the Philippines. The airfield was located roughly two miles inland from the northern coast of Negros. To the south is Highway 1 and to the southeast is Caduhaan (Kaduhaan). Also known as Carolina de la Paz or Luisita. Also known as Manapla Airfield for Manapla located to the southwest.
This area was part of Hacienda Luisita a sugar cane plantation with a narrow gauge railroad with carts to bring sugar cane from the fields to the refinery.
During the Japanese occupation, a single runway was built at this location for use as a fighter strip. The only structure built at the runway was was a buried concrete bunker to serve as a command center and air raid shelter. The Japanese used sugar cane plantation narrow gauge railroad with carts to transport fuel and bombs from the coast inland to the airfield.
Used by the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) fighters including the 71st Hiko Sentai operating the Ki-84 Frank. Starting in the middle of November 1944 until early 1945 attacked by U. S. bombers and fighters.
American missions against Carolina Airfield
November 15, 1944–January 19, 1945
Abandoned after the war as an airfield. Today it is a sugar cane field.
Narrow Gauge Rail Road and Carts
The narrow gauge railroad line and carts remain.
Command Center Bunker
The remains of concrete fortification built by the Japanese as a command center are still standing. This was the only permanent building at the airstrip, and was covered in earth to hide it from observation.
HO-5 20mm Cannon
David Mason adds: "Using a metal detector we were able to recover numerous Japanese 20mm shell casings and an HO-5 20mm cannon."
