RAN officer from Rendering Mines Safe Unit (RMSU) defuses a Japanese 60kg bomb at Alexishafen Airfield
The officer is delousing or defusing a bomb. In the background is a pile of at least five 60kg aerial bombs with double bands on the bomb casing. The Japanese sign warns personnel to avoid the booby trapped bombs placed at the edge of Alexishafen Airfield No. 1 runway and North Coast Road. The Japanese Army had abandoned a pile of thirty bombs with a booster charge attached to a timer powered by a battery that would explode to demolish the area when Allied forces arrived. The bomb had commenced ticking when the Australians arrived but was rendered safe by disconnecting the battery powering the firing mechanism.
