Location Baker Island Airfield is located on Baker Island in the Pacific Ocean. Also known as simply Baker Airfield. Part of the United States Minor Outlying Islands (Unincorporated Unorganized Territory) of the United States of America (USA). Construction On September 1, 1943 the U.S. Navy (USN) began construction of a single runway on the island. Wartime Usage USAAF P-40's were stationed on Baker Island. American units based at Baker 15th FG, 45th FS (P-40N) November 28, 1943 departs Nanumea On October 23, 1943 P-40s Warhawks from Baker claimed a Japanese flying boat shot down 70 miles south of Baker. During November 13-19, 1943 U.S. Army and U.S. Navy aircraft from Task Force 57 (TF-57) commanded by Rear Admiral J. H. Hoover attack Japanese bases in the Gilbert and Marshalls. During December 1943 until January 1944, B-24s stage through Baker for combat missions against Japanese targets including Maloelap and Majuro and Mili, Wotje and Maloelap. Contribute
