Wartime History During World War II, PBY Catalina flying boats operated from NAS Banana River to patrol off eastern coast of Florida over the Atlantic Ocean. Postwar Turned over to the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and still in use today as Patrick Air Force Base (Patrick AFB) as a military airfield with two runways.
