    Battle of Empress Augusta Bay Autonomous Region of Bougainville PNG

The Battle of Empress Augusta Bay occurred in Empress Augusta Bay to the west of Bougainville Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Wartime History
During the night of November 2, 1943 U. S. Navy (USN) Task Force 39 (TF-39) commanded by Rear Admiral Merrill intercepted a Japanese Naval force sent to attack the American landing force inside Empress Augusta Bay that landed at Cape Torokina. The Battle off Empress Augusta Bay results in the sinking a Japanese cruiser and a destroyer. The Japanese were forced to turn back and the battle was an American victory.
