Location
The Battle Off Samar happened off Samar Island in the Philippines as one of the related
actions that comprised the Battle for Leyte Gulf.
The combatants were Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) versus U. S. Navy (USN) plus carrier aircraft. Also known as simply "Battle of Samar" or "The Battle of Samar".
Wartime History
During the night of October 24, 1944 the Japanese "Central Force" made a night passage through San Bernardino Strait. On October 25, 1944 shortly after dawn the Japanese opened fire on Task Group 77.4 (TG 77.4). During the battle, USS Gambier Bay CVE-73 plus destroyers USS Hoel DD-533, USS Johnston DD-557 and USS Samuel B. Roberts DE-413 were sunk by Japanese gunfire. Three Japanese heavy cruisers were sunk by carrier aircraft.
