Runway - Looking South

Gusap was in the front line from November 1943 til April 1944, when Hollandia was taken by Allied forces. After that time the battles moved away and Gusap gradually became less important. Never-the-less, six months in the firing line certainly made its impression on the men who served there. There are records and memories of several airbattles over Gusap, and on at least one occasion the men who served there were convinced that a parachute invasion by Japanese forces was about to occur.
