John Douglas   February 2001 Wreck News Updates

Email  Wreck related briefs from John Douglas in Papua New Guinea

The highlight of February was a visit to Gusap airstrip.Gusap was built in late 1943 early 1944, and was frontline for six months.Exploring is half done, the other half in May. I've written a special report on Gusap for you. One outcome of the Gusap trip is a potential restoration of a small bulldozer [airborne] that I found at Gusap. I'm getting the technical manual now, and collecting other information that I will need.

I'm working on a couple of PNG MIA cases, one on the Sepik River and another out of Popondetta, that will take time to solve. I added up the wrecks reported to me that seem to contain human remains that I need to check up on {time and money]. 22 sites. to investigate. Plus lots more vague tales to follow up on.

Four RAAF crew were recovered out of the sea near Kiriwina Island recently, so gradually the remains are being recovered.
