John Douglas August 2003 Wreck Diary
In June I got photographs of several wrecks along the North Coast of New Guinea, near Saidor. They included two A-20s, previously known; a Ki-49 Helen that had force landed in the kunai to the east of Saidor and was burnt out in the centre section; and the remains of a Oscar to the west of Saidor.
There are further stories of wrecks not yet photographed in this area, and hopefully more reports will be forthcoming in the months ahead.
Near Wewak one of the offshore island is Wallis Island, and I have had previous reports of 3 wrecks there. The camera I sent didn’t work so I am now sending a new camera (and photographer) hopefully for much better results.
Work is picking up a little, so I hope shortly to be able to afford a trip in the Owen Stanley Ranges near False Gap, adjacent to the better known Kokoda Gap where I have reports of several wrecks.
