Incredible story! Can you follow-up with the veteran's story, unit, experiences, etc?
Thanks for the good post, Eric

Re: Pilot found hanging in tree on the Kokoda track PNG
Rediculous. A corpse in that climate would disintegrate in a matter of days. I've found many skeletons in caves from WWII and no clothing has ever survived the harsh climates. Hoax, nothing more.

Re: Consolidated PB2Y Coronado
Ron: According to the Lonley Planet travel book for Saipan, they state that just off of Managaha Island there is a PB2Y Coronado in relatively shallow water. Apparently the PB2Y was at anchor when some Japanese, who were hiding on the island, swam out to the aircraft and placed some explosive charg...

Re: New Guy In Saipan
I have that info but need to find it. In a nutshell, B-29 crashed into the mountain in 1945 after a mission over Japan. There were no survivors.

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Joe, Just visited the archives...they are in College Park, MD--not Quantico. That will be the key for you since they store all the official action reports, war diaries, journals, rosters, muster rolls, etc. An amazing place! They also store the naval records and ships' logs/diaries, etc. Very overwh...

Re: Gauging interest in a complete Google Earth airfield tou
I have been compiling, for some time now, a complete Google Earth tour of all the airfields of the Solomons, New Guinea, and the Philippines areas. I have used the text from the pacific wrecks website, and it will be arranged to play in a roughly chronologic order. Would anyone be interested in thi...

As a follow up. The ambush by the Japanese happened on March 26th, 1945 around 0500 and was conducted by some 250 infiltrators. They hit the western side of airfield #2 being guarded by the 5th Pioneer Battalion. Many of those Marines, however, didn't have ammo for their rifles since they turned the...

Joe, I'm not sure if it is possible to research online or not. The Marine Archives have records, some on mico film, including unit rosters, official action and after-action reports and war diaries. I'm planning a trip to Quantico and the Archives soon so may be able to check into this for you. Right...
