Re:Serial Numbers

Hi I think you will find these aircraft were USAF not RAAF. Try Peter Dunns site http://www.ozatwar.com for more info on the crash, there is a firsthand account of the accident on there. Cheers Rod

Thanks for the Info

Hi interesting you say it was found north of the harbour as this means that they had no intenion of meeting up with their mother sub which was waiting to the south (or so we assumed?). As an archaeologist i realised last years claims were rubbish a fragment of copper wire!. As it is a war grave no o...

Japanese Midget Submarine Found

Hi just saw the promo for this weekends 60 Minutes. The footage shows a midget sub lying on her keel on the seafloor! It is the right type, the conning tower gives it away. It will view on Sunday night and the exact location will be kept a secret (as it is a war grave) but my hunch is a little way o...

Re:Deal Island crash

Hi one of the pilots who died in the Oxford crash had some of his kit for sale on ebay recently. I got one of his goggles (utility pair) other items were his flight helmet etc. I guess these were his spares. Cheers Rod

Re:Spitfires

Hi yes the RAAF used Spitfires in Darwin against the Japanese air attacks (64 all up). They had a shocking record to start with. Many could not handle the tropical conditions. The losses were high mainly due to mechanical problems not the Zeros. I think the RNZAF used them in the Pacific too maybe a...

Re:Japanese Mountain Gun

Hi i thought it may be a longshot asking for info on an predominately aero site. Glad of any info on the type 94. If you can email any info you have that would be great. Email is rodmountford@optusnet.com.au Cheers Rod
PS we hoped to get it conserved so any clues to paint type would also be great

HMAS Sydney Body Exhumation

Hi saw on the ABC that finally the body of a seaman washed ashore on Christmas Island has been exhumed. This was the body found in the Caley? lifeboat months after the sinking. Hopefully with DNA the sailor may be identified with the help of relatives and can be reburied in Australia. Cheers Rod

RE:US Occupation

Hi I also have a Japanese connection,my wife is Japanese and her grandfather was killed by a B29 raid on Himeji. As to the planes used after occupation they would have been an assortment B 29s B24s P 51s P61s F4Us etc. As to the airfield in question google has not turned up anything? Cheers Rod

Swamp Ghost

Hi have heard the rumours about its recovery as well and have made attempts to contact some people who may be involved but have had no conformation either way! Of course if recovered it will go to the States as any recovery and restoration will run into the millions. Interesting to see what happens ...
