My uncle's plane was shot down over Japan in WW2

Post by x-Army-aviator »

Hi,
I knew I wanted to fly when I saw my uncle's uniform with his wings hanging in my Dad's closet. I was fortunate enough to get to fly UH-1s in the Army as well as some fixed wing. Just recently, a friend told me about the CAF and I started wondering exactly what plane my uncle was flying on. I believe he was a navigator on either a B-17 or a B-24. I'd really like to know which it was.

His plane was shot down over Japan/Okinawa on July 31, 1945. My grandparents and Dad were told that he was taken as a POW. Later (perhaps years later), they were told that the POWs were beheaded rather than being returned. Therefore, I never got to meet my uncle.

I would welcome any information about him. Here is the info that I know:
2LT Nathaniel Hoffman
98 BOMBARDMENT SQUADRON 11 BOMBARDMENT GROUP (HEAVY)

Thank you,
Alice
