3 Lost B-24's in Burma 14 Nov. 1943

Post by rspeck »

My uncle SSGT Carl Speck was a tail gunner on a B-24 from the 10th AF, 7th Bomb Group, 493rd Bomb SQD, part of a 6 plane formation in route to bomb the town of Pakokku, Burma (Myanmar). On or about the 14th of November 1943, they were attacked by fifteen to twenty Japanese fighters. After several attacks my uncle's plane had suffered heavy damage and went out of control. It rolled over on it's back and dived straight into the ground from 11000 feet. Two other planes were also lost. The crew of the Speck plane consists of FLO George R. Johnson, 1LT George H. Kimball, 2LT Hayman Leibowitz, 2LT Albert Walker Jr., SSGT William C. Becker, SSGT Paul B. Callahan, SSGT Quintin D. Cory, and SSGT Carl A. Speck. The crews remains were recovered in the 1980's and buried in a mass grave at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri.

Please help discover the name of the B-24, and / or the Serial number of my uncles plane for a future memorial.
