Guadalcanal Plane Wrecks

Post by equinoxboy »

Back in 1980, I spent a few months exploring Guadalcanal. It was paradise for finding war relics, or "war junk" as my uncle and his family (he was doctor for Guadalcanal) called it. The Pacific Wrecks website has been an amazing find for me, although many of the wrecks I remember don't seem to be mentioned.
One in particular: West of Honiara, the road to Visale passed through jungle with a village just to the south of the road. Slap bang in the middle of this village, there was the bright pink fusillage of a large bomber. Can anybody identify this plane for me? 30 years on, is it still there?
Not far off shore from Honiara, there was a single engined, American plane lying on its back. The glass bottomed boat used to include this as part of its tour. Just before I was there, the pilot of the plane had made the pilgrimage to see his craft. Is this still visible, too?
