F4U-1 Recovered from Lake Michigan

Post by Joer911 »

Another aircraft is recovered from Lake Michigan. This F4U is one of over 200+ Navy aircraft lost in Lake Michigan during WWII. These planes, many combat survivors, were stationed at NAS Glenview. Two side-paddle wheel steamships were converted into the training aircraft carries USS Wolverine (IX-64)b and USS Sable (IX-81) and were stationed on the Chicago lakefront. Training spanned from August of 1942 through September 1945. The carriers were scrapped in 1948.

I've had my kit for over 4 years. Great flying plane. Using the original recommended MP Jet Blue Outrunner (dis) but an AXI is a good substitute. HS-55s all around. Lightweight, fast, and highly maneuverable. Suffers from a lot of hanger rash due to the type of foam but overall a great looking model. Take-offs (hand toss) are a bit difficult but once she's in the air, she handles very well. Landings are also a breeze. Worth the investment.
