C-87 41-24027

Post by Anthony J. Mireles »

Looking for correct date for the accident involving C-87 # 41-24027.

The accident report I have on microfilm indicates that the accident occurred on 2 August 1943.

But the accident report is filed under 1 August 1942.

The 1943 date on the report could be a typo error and the accident is really 1942. Or the the accident occurred in 1943 and the report is mis-filed under 1942.

Pilot was Herschel V. Laughlin (UAL).

Any help appreciated.

Greetings Tony,

I suspect that the correct date is 2 August 1943, since the C-87 was the cargo version of the B-24 bomber, and I do not believe that any were converted prior to the end of 1942. You might want to check on a history of the B-24 and see when the conversions started.

Also, I just noticed that you are located in Calumet City. I grew up in Dolton, and am a graduate of Thornridge High School, 1969.

Timerover 51,

T.F. North 1981. So I am catcing up with you. Where are you living now?

At Thornridge, What sports did you play? Maybe you competed against some of my relatives.

Evidence indicates that the correct date is 2 August 1943.

That means that the AAF Form No. 14 Aircraft Accident Report for this C-87 is mis-filed under 1 August 1942 on the microfilm record.

Thanks to all who helped.

I am presently in Zion, Illinois, about an hour and a half to the north of you. As for sports, I was one of the class brains, and most definitely not an athlete. I currently am putting together an expedition return to the New Georgia group in the Solomon Islands, where I was in May of 2002 with Bob Ballard looking for PT-109, and look for more wrecks on the bottom. Do you have any records on B-24 going down in that area that might be on the ocean bottom? There are quite a few single-engined planes down there, a couple of which we picked up on our side scan sonar, but I was wondering if we might come across any twin-engine aircraft besides Japanese Betties.
