Navy Cross Recipient
My grandfather was one of the three to get The Navy Cross
for extraordinary heroism the night of September 13th -14th 1942 during
the Battle of Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal. In face of withering
enemy machine gun & mortar fire, Pvt. Robert Schneider without orders,
took charge of and himself assisted in carrying machine gun & mortar
ammunition along Lunga Ridge to the spots where these weapons were in
action. He was wounded by shrapnel in the Solomons. I am trying to get
his Purple Heart awarded to him, he has since died.
Seeking Purple Heart
are trying to get his medical records from the government, but there is alot of
red tape. We are trying to find the field hospital where he was taken to, or find
a record of his injury.
We have a news
paper article, but the government needs more to give the Purple Heart. Anyone
with information on his battalion, the 1st.Marine Battalion "Devils Brigade",
please contact me.
