Location Kieta Harbor is located on the eastern coast of Bougainville Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Borders the the Kieta Peninsula and Kieta to the west and Bakawari Island to the east. Wartime History On March 31, 1942 at dawn, Kieta was occupied without resistance by a platoon of Japanese Navy Special Naval Landing Forces (SNLF). During the war used as an anchorage by the Japanese and occupied until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. Allied missions against Kieta Harbor January 21, 1943–June 14, 1944 Kieta Wharf The Kieta Wharf has been cleaned and is back in use since the Civil War. There is still a half submerged wreck beside the wharf. During 1999, the Christian book ship MV Doulos was docked for a month at Kieta Wharf. Wogoromodo Reef Wreck Unknown vessel (barge?) on the reef between Tautsina and Arovo Islands. Mawara Bay Bay on the south side of Kieta Peninsula, east of Kieta Harbor. Large Japanese Wreck Sunk by air attack in Mawara Bay off Kieta Harbor. Small Japanese Wreck Sunk in Mawara Bay off Kieta Harbor. Yoshinogawa Maru Sunk off Kieta on January 9, 1943 Contribute
