The Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) is located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Formally known as Bougainville Province or North Solomons Province. The region encompasses Bougainville Island plus the surrounding islands and atolls. Between 1884–1914 the northern portion was Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea) until September 1914. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of the Kieta District in the Territory of New Guinea. Postwar, part of Bougainville Province or North Solomons Province. During the Pacific War, Bougainville was considered part of the North Solomons or Northern Solomons. On September 16, 1975 became part of Papua New Guinea (PNG). On June 25, 2002 became the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB). To the south is the international border with the Solomon Islands and Western Province.
